Truist Championship Set for Philadelphia Cricket Club This Week

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Truist Championship is set to kick off on May 8 at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, marking the first time the club will host a PGA Tour event in over 100 years. The event comes just before next week’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club.
The Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course, originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast in 1922, has undergone renovations and is recognized for its challenging architecture. This tournament will feature a re-routed layout, giving players a unique starting point that includes holes designed to test their skills.
“Having caddied and been a member at Philadelphia Cricket for 14 years, I can certainly say each hole presents distinct challenges,” said an anonymous member. “The course has a way of testing the best golfers,” they added.
The 7,119-yard par-70 course includes signature holes such as the par-5 7th, known as the “Great Hazard,” which features a series of bunkers that challenge players both off the tee and on their approach.
“The greens are fast, and players will need to be precise with their approach shots,” said golf commentator Jack Hirsh. “The firm bentgrass greens can make it very hard to hold the respective tiers, especially with challenging pin placements.”
Among the golf elite participating this week are Rory McIlroy, fresh off his Masters victory, and Collin Morikawa, who is adapting to a new caddie, Joe Greiner. McIlroy aims to build on his success, while Morikawa seeks to regain his winning form after a series of close yet unsuccessful finishes.
The tournament is set to draw a strong field, showcasing the talent in professional golf as players prepare for the PGA Championship. Golf enthusiasts and local fans are excited to witness the professional showcase at the historic Philadelphia Cricket Club.
As golf fans tune in, many will be looking for standout performances from players who traditionally excel on Tillinghast designs and those who can navigate the unique challenges presented by the course.
