Tsitsipas Aims for Revenge Against Musetti at Madrid Open

Madrid, Spain – Stefanos Tsitsipas is gearing up for a highly anticipated clash with Lorenzo Musetti in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open. After struggling in earlier tournaments, Tsitsipas is eager to reignite his clay season in the Spanish capital.
Tsitsipas posted on Instagram, reflecting on his recent performance, stating, “Clay in my shoes, sweat on my shirt, and a suspicious number of churros after.” A finalist at the Caja Magica in 2019 and a runner-up at Roland-Garros in 2021, he is regarded as one of today’s top clay-court players.
The Greek star faced setbacks this month, including a disappointing quarter-final exit in Monte Carlo, where he lost to eventual finalist Musetti. He also had to retire shortly after starting his match against Arthur Fils in Barcelona due to a back issue.
In a hard-fought first-round match against Jan-Lennard Struff, Tsitsipas won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, expressing satisfaction with his performance. “I had to work hard for it… I would say that the way it ended, I was very satisfied to be able to close it in that sense,” he said.
This upcoming match against Musetti represents not only a chance for revenge but also a test of Tsitsipas’ newly adopted racquet, which he switched to earlier this year. The change contributed to his victory at the ATP 500 in Dubai. “It requires ferocity and being a big risk-taker. These things need to happen before the season starts,” he explained.
Musetti, ranked No. 11 in the world, is feeling the pressure of breaking into the top 10, as he currently sits just outside that bracket. He secured a straight-sets victory over Tomas Etcheverry, boosting his confidence ahead of facing Tsitsipas. “He’s going to be hungry to take the revenge. But I think I’m ready to rumble,” Musetti stated.
Both players will bring their unique one-handed backhands into this face-off, making it a compelling matchup for tennis fans. As Tsitsipas prepares to correct previous mistakes, Musetti remains focused on his own game and the opportunity that lies ahead.
