Tulane University Football Team Loss

New Orleans, Louisiana

Tulane University’s hopes for a spot in the College Football Playoff took a hit on Thursday as they fell to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in a 48-26 blowout. The Green Wave experienced a lackluster performance that raised questions about their season, especially after a solid twelve days of preparation.

This defeat was not attributed to bad officiating or bad luck. Instead, UTSA dominated the game both offensively and defensively. The Green Wave struggled throughout the match, showing numerous avoidable mistakes, including turnovers and penalties, which and have plagued them this season. These issues culminated against a team that entered the game with a losing record.

Quarterback Michael Retzlaff faced criticism for his play. Earlier in the season, fans expected some growing pains as he joined the team late, but by week 10, his performance should have improved. His early-season mistakes may have been understandable, but his missteps in this game were glaring.

Injuries have hindered Tulane as well, particularly the absence of key linebackers, which has affected their defensive strategies. Despite the injuries on defense, the offense has largely remained intact, leaving questions unanswered regarding the team’s disappointing performance.

Coach Phil Sumrall was also under scrutiny, especially as rumors of potential coaching vacancies have swirled around him all season. He stated his focus was on UTSA, but his team appeared distractingly unprepared. Defensive failures were evident as UTSA quarterback Frank Harris threw for 370 yards, completed 93.9% of his passes, and scored four touchdowns.

The lack of adjustments during the game raised eyebrows, forcing Tulane to endure a comprehensive loss for all 60 minutes. With their playoff aspirations now dim, the Green Wave must regroup quickly. They face a tough challenge next week against the No. 22-ranked team, further complicating their hopes for a successful finish.

Now, Tulane must find a way to bounce back if they wish to salvage their season and prove the naysayers wrong.
