Tulsa Fires Coach Kevin Wilson After Latest Blowout Loss
Tulsa is firing coach Kevin Wilson, sources confirmed to ESPN on Sunday, following a dismal 63-30 loss at the University of South Florida (USF) on Saturday. This decision marks the end of Wilson’s tenure at Tulsa, where he compiled a 7-16 record over his two seasons as head coach.
Wilson’s team suffered significantly during his time at Tulsa, losing nine games by more than 30 points. The decision to fire him was driven by the team’s poor performance and cultural issues within the program. A new administration at Tulsa did not see a viable path to change the current environment, leading to the call for a fresh start.
Tulsa officials are committed to elevating the football program, including a significant increase in financial resources to compete at a championship level in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). This move is part of a broader trend in the Group of 5 conferences, where coaching tenures are becoming shorter. Tulsa, Charlotte, and Florida Atlantic University (FAU) have all fired their coaches before the end of their second seasons.
Kevin Wilson previously served as the head coach at Indiana, where he had a 26-47 record with two bowl appearances over six seasons. He was also the offensive coordinator at Ohio State before taking the helm at Tulsa in December 2022, replacing Philip Montgomery.
The firing of Kevin Wilson adds to the growing list of coaching vacancies in the AAC, with six open jobs now, including those at Charlotte, Rice, Temple, East Carolina, and FAU. This development is part of the 2025 coaching carousel, which has seen significant turnover in college football.
