Twins’ Catching Duo Faces Uncertainty Ahead of 2025 Season
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Minnesota Twins‘ catching situation for the 2025 season hinges on the tandem of Ryan Jeffers and Christian Vázquez, who nearly split playing time equally in 2024. Jeffers emerged as an offensive standout, while Vázquez solidified his reputation as a defensive anchor. Together, the duo contributed a combined 2.3 WAR, ranking eighth among American League catching units.
Jeffers, 27, posted a .265 batting average with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 2024, showcasing his ability to deliver at the plate. Vázquez, 34, maintained a .240 average but excelled defensively, throwing out 35% of base stealers and earning praise for his game-calling skills. Despite their complementary strengths, the Twins’ catching corps remains a topic of speculation as the team evaluates its roster for the upcoming season.
Trade rumors have swirled around Vázquez, whose $10 million salary for 2025 could make him a candidate to be moved. “We’re always looking to improve the team,” said Twins general manager Thad Levine. “Christian has been a tremendous asset, but we have to weigh all options, especially with payroll considerations.”
The Twins also face decisions regarding their minor league catching prospects. Diego Cartaya, acquired in a midseason trade, struggled in Double-A but remains a highly regarded talent. Meanwhile, Jair Camargo, 25, impressed in Triple-A with a .280 average and 15 home runs, positioning himself as a potential call-up if the Twins make changes.
“The development of our young catchers will be critical,” said Twins manager Rocco Baldelli. “We have to balance short-term needs with long-term planning, and that includes evaluating how our prospects fit into the bigger picture.”
As the Twins prepare for spring training, the catching position remains a focal point. While Jeffers and Vázquez provide stability, the team’s willingness to explore trades and promote prospects could reshape the roster. “It’s a fluid situation,” Levine added. “We’ll continue to monitor the market and our internal options to ensure we’re in the best position to compete.”
