Twins Struggle Early in Season, Prepare for Crucial Series Against Orioles

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Minnesota Twins are facing tough challenges in the early 2025 MLB season, currently holding a record of 15-20, placing them fourth in the American League Central.
Team President Derek Falvey has expressed concern over the team’s performance, describing their start as disappointing. The Twins trail the division-leading Detroit Tigers by seven games.
Despite solid pitching, ranking seventh in the league with a 3.60 ERA, the Twins’ offensive struggles are notable, as they sit 21st in batting. Their roster remains largely unchanged from last year, featuring key players like Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton, and new addition Ty France.
Buxton continues to lead the team in wins above replacement (WAR) but is also struggling with strikeouts. Correa’s performance has been lackluster, recording a -0.1 WAR and a .560 OPS, while Julien was recently sent to the minors for underperformance.
On the upside, catcher Ryan Jeffers and outfielder Matt Wallner are performing well, boasting OPS numbers of .796 and .847, respectively. Star pitchers such as Joe Ryan and Pablo López have also had strong starts, with López holding a 2.25 ERA over his first five games.
The Twins will face the Baltimore Orioles in a significant three-game series, starting with Game 1 at 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup features Orioles’ Cade Povich against Twins’ Pablo López.
Povich is trying to establish consistency after showing promise in multiple outings. López will look to maintain his strong performance against the Orioles, following a year where he was a top starter for Minnesota.
Game 2 on Wednesday will feature an unknown starter for the Orioles against the Twins’ Simeon Woods Richardson, who is struggling with consistency this season.
In the final game of the series on Thursday, Dean Kremer will pitch for Baltimore against Joe Ryan, whose impressive season includes five outings where he allowed one run or fewer.
