Tyrese Haliburton Leads Pacers to NBA Finals for First Time in 25 Years

OKLAHOMA CITY, June 5, 2025 — Tyrese Haliburton is set to lead the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2000. After 3 1/2 seasons with the Pacers, Haliburton has established himself as a franchise star, playing a pivotal role in the team’s surprising success this postseason.
In April, following the Pacers’ win over the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round, Haliburton was named the most overrated player in a poll conducted by The Athletic. Rather than deter him, he has taken the criticism as motivation, leading the Pacers to an Eastern Conference championship. “I think any doubt is always good for me,” Haliburton said. “The greats try to find external motivation, and that’s something that has always worked for me.”
Throughout the playoffs, the 25-year-old point guard has averaged 18.8 points, 9.8 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure. His playmaking and clutch performances have proven essential in tight games.
In a thrilling Game 5 against Milwaukee, Haliburton scored the game-winning basket in overtime, demonstrating both skill and resolve. “He’s a general out there,” said Pacers forward Pascal Siakam. “He makes us go, so we’re gonna ride with Tyrese until the wheels fall off.”
Haliburton’s journey has not been without challenges. Originally drafted by the Sacramento Kings, he was traded to the Pacers early in his career. Despite the abrupt change, he has flourished in Indiana, resonating with the city’s fans and culture. “Indy is a great place for me. I love being here,” he stated.
Now, the Pacers, who entered the playoffs as the fourth seed, face off against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder, led by MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, boasts a formidable roster with a league-best 68-14 record this season.
The best-of-seven finals will test Haliburton and the Pacers’ resilience. “We’re ready for this moment,” Haliburton said. “We’re excited to get on that stage.” The series begins Thursday in Oklahoma City, as the Pacers aim for their first championship.
