Tyrese Maxey Out for Season with Finger Injury, Sixers’ Hopes Dwindle

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is expected to miss the remainder of the NBA season due to a finger tendon injury, as confirmed by his agent and Klutch Sports CEO, Rich Paul, on Thursday.
The 24-year-old Maxey has been sidelined since March 3, struggling to recover from the injury sustained during a game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Despite attempts to rehabilitate the tendon, he continues to experience discomfort and requires additional treatment.
Maxey has had a standout season, averaging a career-high 26.3 points, alongside 6.1 assists and 3.3 rebounds over the course of 52 games. He earned All-Star honors and was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2023-24 season. However, his shooting percentage has dropped to a career-low 43.7% this year.
The 76ers’ struggles have been compounded by injuries to key players, including Joel Embiid and Paul George, both now ruled out for the season. As a result, Philadelphia has been unable to recover from a season characterized by disappointment; they sit at the bottom of the league standings with a record of 23-53.
The team is currently mired in a nine-game losing streak, with only six games left in the regular season. They have lost 24 of their last 27 games, severely diminishing their chances of making the playoffs.
As the franchise focuses on the future, retaining their first-round draft pick has become a priority. The pick is top-six protected; if the Sixers finish with one of the top six selections in the upcoming draft, they will retain it. However, if they fall outside that range, the pick will go to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a previous trade deal involving Danny Green. Currently, Philadelphia holds the fifth position in the lottery standings, ahead of the sixth-place team by two games.
Maxey’s injury marks another blow for a franchise struggling to find its footing amidst ongoing setbacks. The 76ers are set to face the Milwaukee Bucks in their next game amid dwindling hopes for a turnaround this season.
