UAB’s Yaxel Lendeborg Shatters Records in Tournament Win

FORT WORTH, Texas — Yaxel Lendeborg delivered a historic performance on March 14, leading No. 3 UAB to a 94-77 victory over No. 6 East Carolina in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
Lendeborg achieved a remarkable stat line, scoring 30 points and grabbing 20 rebounds, while also contributing eight assists, five steals, and four blocks. This marked not only the first 30-point, 20-rebound game in UAB’s history but also the first of its kind in AAC Tournament history. With this win, the Blazers improve to 21-11 overall and advance to face No. 2 North Texas in the semifinals.
The victory was pivotal as UAB looks to secure back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Lendeborg’s impressive effort proved crucial in overcoming a tough regular-season finish. All five UAB starters scored in double figures, including senior Tony Toney, who achieved his first career double-double, netting 11 points while securing 10 rebounds.
The Blazers dominated the boards, out-rebounding East Carolina 43-29, with a notable 13-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. UAB capitalized on these opportunities, scoring 46 points in the paint, showcasing their strong inside game.
East Carolina’s RJ Felton attempted to carry his team, finishing as the game’s top scorer with 31 points on 19 shots. However, with few contributions from his teammates, the Pirates struggled offensively, as their starters outside of Felton combined for only 32 points.
Earlier in the regular season, UAB and North Texas split their two-game series, each winning on their home court. UAB won their latest meeting 64-61 on February 2, while North Texas had previously come out on top with a buzzer-beater in the first game.
The highly anticipated semifinal matchup is scheduled for March 15 at 5 p.m. ET (4 p.m. CT) and will be broadcast on ESPN2 and ESPN+.
Statistically, Lendeborg not only set individual season highs in this game but also demonstrated his overall impact throughout the tournament. His effort is indicative of a player eager to make a deep postseason run for UAB, with sights set on the NCAA Tournament.
As Lendeborg aims for March Madness glory, he continues to draw attention after transferring from Arizona Western, where he was a two-time NJCAA All-American. His extraordinary performance on the Division I stage has placed him firmly in the spotlight.
