LONG BEACH, Calif. — The No. 1-ranked UCLA women’s basketball team extended its historic undefeated streak to 17-0 on Wednesday night, defeating Penn State 83-67 at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach. The Bruins, displaced from their home court at Pauley Pavilion due to nearby wildfires, showcased resilience and dominance in their temporary venue.

UCLA’s Lauren Betts led the charge with a standout performance, recording 22 points, 12 rebounds, seven blocks, and four assists. Her ninth double-double of the season highlighted her efficiency, as she shot 10 for 16 from the field. Despite a slow start, the Bruins rallied to secure the victory, setting a program record for the best start to a season.

The game began with UCLA struggling from beyond the arc, missing all eight three-point attempts in the first quarter. Betts’ scoring in the post kept the Bruins within striking distance, but they trailed 19-17 after the opening period. The second quarter saw eight lead changes as both teams battled fiercely.

UCLA’s offense found its rhythm in the second half, fueled by point guard Kiki Rice, whose defensive efforts sparked fast-break opportunities. The Bruins built a 23-point lead but allowed Penn State to narrow the gap to seven points early in the fourth quarter. A late 7-0 run, led by Londynn Jones, Gabriela Jaquez, and Rice, sealed the win for UCLA.

Head coach Cori Close, the winningest coach in UCLA women’s basketball history, credited her team’s adaptability and focus amid challenging circumstances. “Our players have shown incredible resilience,” Close said. “To perform at this level under these conditions speaks volumes about their character.”

The Bruins’ victory came just days after returning from Indiana, where wildfires near Westwood forced the team to relocate. The Palisades fire and other blazes have disrupted campus life, with UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk announcing extended remote instruction through Jan. 17.

UCLA’s next challenge will be maintaining its momentum as it navigates the remainder of the season. The team’s ability to thrive under pressure has solidified its status as a national title contender.
