Uconn Women's Basketball National Championship Game

TAMPA, Florida — The South Carolina Gamecocks faced off against the UConn Huskies in the 2025 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, ultimately succumbing to a decisive 82-59 defeat at Amalie Arena on April 6.

A pivotal performance from UConn’s Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong, who each scored 24 points, propelled the Huskies to victory. Paige Bueckers contributed significantly as well, adding 17 points as she closed her impressive college career.

The game started with a competitive pace, as both teams traded shots in the opening minutes. However, the Gamecocks’ offense faltered down the stretch, leading to a 19-14 UConn advantage at the end of the first quarter, with Fudd scoring seven of the Huskies’ first 17 points.

South Carolina remained within striking distance during the second quarter but faced significant challenges with offensive consistency. They struggled through multiple scoring droughts, including two stretches of over five minutes without a field goal. The Gamecocks entered halftime trailing 36-26.

The second half proved disastrous for South Carolina, which fell behind by as many as 32 points. UConn’s defense and efficient offense stifled the Gamecocks at every turn, leading to an overwhelming scoring disparity.

UConn showcased its dominance in several key statistical areas, out-rebounding South Carolina and committing fewer turnovers. Despite a strong season where they finished with a record of 35-4, the Gamecocks ultimately could not match UConn’s relentless attack.

“We played well and executed our game plan,” Fudd said after the game. “It feels great to win this championship for our team and our school.”

With this victory, UConn solidifies its status as a powerhouse in women’s college basketball, while South Carolina vows to build for the future following a challenging championship appearance.
