Uconn Basketball Team March Madness 2025

RALEIGH, N.C. — The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team, seeded No. 8 in the NCAA Tournament, prepares to face the No. 9 seed Oklahoma in their first-round matchup on Friday night at the Lenovo Center. This year’s competition comes on the heels of two consecutive championships, but expectations are tempered as the Huskies aim to avoid an early exit.

Despite being noted as the most popular pick to win the tournament in previous seasons, the Huskies face significant challenges this year. Coach Dan Hurley recognizes the high stakes and noted the need for his team to embrace their underdog status. “When we’re the underdogs, I think we perform better,” said team captain Alex Karaban. “We definitely feel the chip on our shoulder and we’re just excited to go out there on Friday. There’s no pressure on us.”

UConn enters the tournament after struggling defensively, ranking 95th in efficiency throughout the season. They will need to tighten their defense against an Oklahoma team that is known for its offensive prowess, shooting 36.96% from beyond the arc and ranking No. 22 in offensive efficiency, according to KenPom. Hurley emphasized this challenge, stating, “We’ve got a lot to improve on defensively, especially against a high-scoring team like Oklahoma.”

The matchup is anticipated to be an offensive showcase, as both teams boast top-25 rankings in offensive efficiency. Oklahoma’s standout freshman, Jeremiah Fears, leads the Sooners with an average of 17.0 points per game, while seniors Duke Miles and Jalon Moore provide additional firepower from long-range.

Hurley acknowledged Oklahoma’s strengths, stating, “They have a lot of depth and a lot of weapons, especially at the guard spots. They’re a really, really good offensive team.” This sentiment is echoed by Oklahoma’s coach, Porter Moser, who highlighted UConn’s elite movement on offense as a significant concern for his defense.

Offensively, UConn possesses its own set of talented players, led by Solo Ball, who has emerged as a key scorer this season with an average of 14.6 points per game. Ball’s distinct playing style and confidence have made him a crucial player in UConn’s pursuit of advancing past the first round.

The two teams have met four times previously, with Oklahoma leading the series 3-1. The Huskies have a storied NCAA Tournament history, boasting a 20-4 record in first-round games since seeding began in 1979. UConn is determined to maintain its momentum and continue its streak of 12 consecutive NCAA Tournament wins, all by double figures.

As the tournament unfolds, UConn’s players and coaches must harness their talents while addressing defensive vulnerabilities. The Huskies’ focus on improving their rebounding and defense will be essential if they hope to progress beyond Oklahoma and face potential No. 1 seed Florida in the next round.

UConn’s opening game time is set for 9:25 p.m. and will be televised on TNT. Fans and analysts alike anticipate a riveting clash as the Huskies look to make a deep run in March Madness once again.
