UConn Huskies Face Challenges as Key Player Remains Injured
The UConn Huskies are navigating a challenging stretch of their season as head coach Dan Hurley acknowledged Friday that opponents have a prime opportunity to face the team while star player Liam McNeeley remains sidelined due to injury. The Huskies, currently 12-4, are preparing for a crucial matchup against Georgetown on Saturday.
Hurley emphasized the impact of McNeeley’s absence, stating, ‘This is obviously a really good time for people to play us with Liam out.’ Despite the setback, Hurley expressed optimism about the team’s recent performance, particularly in their loss to Villanova, which he viewed more positively than their victory over Providence. ‘I felt really, really empty with the way that we played in that game (versus Providence),’ Hurley said. ‘There were more things to be excited about (versus Villanova).’
Sophomore guard Solo Ball has emerged as a key contributor in McNeeley’s absence, showcasing significant growth on offense. Ball is averaging 18.9 points per 40 minutes and shooting an impressive 44.4% from three-point range. However, Hurley highlighted areas for improvement, particularly on defense and rebounding. ‘We gotta get Solo back on the glass. Last year he was on the glass great for us, especially the offensive glass,’ Hurley said. ‘We gotta get his defense (going). He’s got all of the components to do it.’
Ball’s development into a two-way player could be pivotal for UConn’s success this season. With his combination of scoring ability and defensive potential, he has the tools to become a standout player in college basketball and a future NBA prospect. The Huskies will look to make a statement against Georgetown as they aim to solidify their standing in the NCAA.
