STORRS, Conn. (AP) — UConn‘s Alex Karaban made a crucial three-pointer with just 23.7 seconds left, leading the Huskies to a 72-66 victory over No. 20 Marquette on Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion. The win boosted UConn’s record to 21-9, tying them with Marquette at 13-6 in the Big East standings.

The game was tightly contested, particularly in the second half, where UConn utilized a decisive 10-0 run that included dunks from Jaylin Stewart and Tarris Reed Jr., allowing them to pull ahead 61-54 with 7:49 left.

Despite trailing, Marquette fought back, with David Joplin closing the gap to 63-60 after a layup with 4:22 on the clock. The Golden Eagles stayed within striking distance and were down by just one point in the final minute.

However, Karaban’s critical trey from the right wing proved to be the difference-maker, as he finished the game with 21 points.

“I just tried to stay confident and take the shot when it mattered,” Karaban said postgame. “The team needed it, and I’m glad I could deliver.”

Marquette held a 37-33 lead at halftime, shooting 51.7 percent from the floor. Joplin was the leading scorer at the break with 14 points, but as the game wore on, the Golden Eagles struggled with their long-range shooting, finishing with just 3-for-22 from beyond the arc.

Kam Jones also contributed 21 points for Marquette, who fell to 22-8 overall. The loss leaves them still needing a strong finish in their upcoming Saturday match against No. 6 St. John’s.

“We fought hard, but it just wasn’t enough,” said Jones. “We need to regroup and be ready for our next game.”

UConn’s strong performance on the boards, where they outrebounded Marquette 44-29, was another critical factor. They dominated offensive rebounds 19-8, which led to second-chance points.

Marquette will host St. John’s on Senior Day this Saturday, while UConn prepares to face Seton Hall, desperately needing another win to secure their postseason momentum.

The pivotal win not only improves UConn’s chances for the upcoming Big East Tournament but also serves as a statement as the defending champions aim for a deep tournament run.
