UFC Champion Belal Muhammad Eyes Summer Return Against Shavkat Rakhmonov
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad has set his sights on a summer return to the Octagon, targeting a highly anticipated title defense against undefeated contender Shavkat Rakhmonov. The fight, initially slated for last month in Las Vegas, was postponed after Muhammad withdrew due to injury.
Muhammad, 36, revealed his plans during a recent interview, stating, “Right after Ramadan, I think. May, June, is the perfect timeline for me.” The champion has already resumed training at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, where he has been focusing on recovery and preparation. “I started last week training with those guys down in Vegas. That was a nice shock to the body,” Muhammad said. “It got me awoken. It let me know, ‘All right, we’ve got to get in shape-shape.'”
The Chicago-born fighter, who holds a record of 24-3 with one No Contest, last competed in July 2024, securing a five-round victory in the UFC 304 main event in Manchester, England. His upcoming bout against Rakhmonov, who boasts a perfect 18-0 record, is expected to be one of the most challenging fights of his career.
Muhammad expressed confidence in his ability to handle Rakhmonov’s skills, emphasizing his unique style and experience. “I don’t think [Shavkat’s] ever fought anybody like me,” he said. “There’s not a lot of guys who ever fought a guy like me, so once you get into the cage with me, it’s different. He’s going to get into the cage with me, realize it’s different, and there’s levels to this. I’m going to show the world why I’m the best welterweight in the world.”
Rakhmonov, meanwhile, remained on the UFC 310 card after Muhammad’s withdrawal, defeating Ian Machado Garry to solidify his status as the division’s top contender. The Kazakh fighter’s dominant performance has only heightened anticipation for his eventual clash with Muhammad.
The UFC has yet to officially announce the rescheduled fight, but sources indicate an announcement could come in the coming weeks. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Muhammad’s strategic approach will fare against Rakhmonov’s relentless pressure and finishing ability.
As Muhammad continues his recovery and training, the welterweight division remains in a holding pattern, with the champion’s return expected to bring clarity to the title picture. For now, all eyes are on Las Vegas, where Muhammad is preparing to defend his crown and prove his dominance in one of the sport’s most competitive weight classes.
