UFC 309: Jon Jones to Defend Heavyweight Title Against Stipe Miocic
UFC President Dana White confirmed that Jon Jones will defend his UFC heavyweight championship against former titleholder Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 309. The much-anticipated fight will take place at the renowned Madison Square Garden in New York on November 16. In a conversation with Complex, White expressed that both Jones and Miocic are finally set to face each other after a long delay.
The bout between Jon Jones, renowned as perhaps the most decorated light heavyweight fighter, and Stipe Miocic, widely considered the greatest heavyweight in UFC history, was initially scheduled for the UFC’s 2023 event in New York. Unfortunately, the fight had to be postponed due to a torn pectoral muscle suffered by Jones, which necessitated surgery and a subsequent rehabilitation period.
Jones, who has held the light heavyweight title with a record number of defenses, hasn’t competed since his March 2023 victory over Ciryl Gane, marking his heavyweight debut. Miocic, on the other hand, has not entered the octagon since March 2021, following his defeat by Francis Ngannou. Many speculate about Miocic’s future in the sport, with some assuming that this fight could be his career-closing appearance, win or lose.
Despite his time away from fighting, Jones is eager to compete against Miocic, who has a renowned record with four successful heavyweight title defenses. The outcome of this contest may lead to yet another intriguing match, as White mentioned that Jones might face Tom Aspinall, the current interim heavyweight champion, if he emerges victorious against Miocic.
Aspinall, with an impressive UFC track record, has been vocal about taking on Jones, adding considerable hype to the potential clash. White believes that this prospective bout could stand out as one of the UFC’s most significant matches.
UFC 309 is set to deliver a riveting main event, spotlighting the legendary face-off between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic. UFC enthusiasts worldwide are keenly awaiting this showdown, which could very well shape the trajectory of the heavyweight division.
