Ugo Humbert Upsets Taylor Fritz at Swiss Indoors Basel
Basel, Switzerland – Ugo Humbert stunned top seed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday night at the Swiss Indoors Basel, marking an important victory in his ATP Tour career.
This win allows Humbert to advance to the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 event, improving his indoor record this season to 10-1. Humbert’s victory over Fritz was noteworthy as it marked his first Top 10 win of the year and the 14th of his career.
Humbert was effective on the court, hitting 22 winners compared to Fritz’s 20. He converted two of five break points to secure his spot in the next round, setting up a quarterfinal matchup against American qualifier Reilly Opelka.
Fritz, who began his campaign in Basel with a challenging three-set match against wildcard Valentin Vacherot, struggled to keep pace with Humbert. This defeat stops Fritz’s run in the tournament, halting his quest for a title.
In a parallel match, Felix Auger-Aliassime, the defending champion, defeated Marin Cilic in a tight match, winning 7-6(2), 7-6(2). Auger-Aliassime’s performance pushed him into the quarterfinals where he will face Jaume Munar, who upset the 2024 finalist Ben Shelton.
Auger-Aliassime excelled on his serve, losing just two points on first serve throughout the match, maintaining his strong performance in Basel, where he has a remarkable 13-1 record.
Casper Ruud, the fourth seed, also moved forward in the tournament, overcoming Stan Wawrinka to set up matches that could heavily affect the ATP rankings as the season progresses.
With Humbert and Auger-Aliassime both advancing, the competition in Basel intensifies as the tournament continues.
