UNC Basketball Gains Commitment from Virginia Tech Transfer Jaydon Young

Chapel Hill, North Carolina — The University of North Carolina basketball program announced on Friday afternoon that it has secured a commitment from guard Jaydon Young, a transfer from Virginia Tech. Young, a 6-foot-4 native of Greensboro, North Carolina, has decided to join the Tar Heels after previously committing to High Point earlier this offseason.
The decision comes after coaching changes at High Point prompted Young to reassess his options. He saw the opportunity to return to his home state and don the Carolina blue for the upcoming season. Young will be a junior this year.
During his time at Virginia Tech, Young played two seasons and made significant strides last year, averaging 8.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game over 22.3 minutes of play. Notably, he scored in double figures during the final six games of the 2024-2025 season, including a standout performance with 27 points against Miami and another game with 26 points in an overtime win versus Syracuse.
As the Tar Heels look to rebuild their backcourt after losing players such as RJ Davis, Young adds crucial depth to the guard position. His prior experience in the ACC and local connections position him as a valuable asset to the program. Despite having a lower shooting percentage, expectations are that with reduced shot attempts, Young will perform better with the additional space and opportunities likely awaiting him in Chapel Hill.
The addition of Young is seen as a smart move for UNC as it prepares for a season filled with new talent and potential. The Tar Heels continue to explore other guard options while integrating Young into their system.
