UNC’s Jae’Lyn Withers Shines with Leadership in Win Over Virginia

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Jae’Lyn Withers contributed significantly to the University of North Carolina‘s 81-66 victory over Virginia on Saturday evening, building on his recent strong performances.
Withers, known as J-Wit among his teammates, scored 16 points and secured 11 rebounds, marking his second double-double of the season. His shooting accuracy was notably highlighted by a 4-for-6 record from beyond the arc. His rise in performance is attributed to an emphasis on teamwork and adaptability outlined by head coach Hubert Davis.
The development of Withers, who is in his fourth season at UNC, reflects the broader dynamics within the Tar Heels‘ team. “Coach Davis has been putting a big emphasis on doing whatever it takes,” Withers said during a postgame interview on the Tar Heel Sports Network. “One of our managers, J.R., said that kind of spells out W-I-T. So I have embraced that and try to make sure I do whatever it takes to get the win.”
In the context of today’s high-profile college athletics, Withers’ approach serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of student-athletes. “Sometimes you’re not quite sure what will connect, but J.R. and Coach Davis have made a significant impact,” Withers added.
Over the past few weeks, Withers’ contributions have intensified, providing a new energy to the Carolina squad. His aggressive play was evident when he fought for an offensive rebound and scored off a missed shot, enhancing Carolina’s lead in the game.
“I’m trying to provide a lot more leadership,” Withers stated. “I’m playing with a lot more energy and more emotion. I’m more animated.” His increased on-court activity has led to noticeable improvements in his game, evidenced by his six offensive rebounds in the last three matches — a stark contrast to his previous performance throughout the Atlantic Coast Conference season.
Despite some moments requiring coaching adjustments, Withers has effectively risen to the occasion. On top of his scoring, the contributions of his teammates, including Powell and Jackson, have also been pivotal, with Powell providing crucial defensive support against Virginia’s Isaac McKneely.
Coach Davis expressed optimism about the team’s cohesiveness. “We’re getting positive play and positive minutes from so many different areas,” he noted. “It’s a collection of guys coming together and trying to be the best they can be.”
The Tar Heels’ navigating toward better synergy is evident as they aim for consistent performance heading into the postseason. Withers’ ongoing development and leadership are essential as the team strives to improve and be competitive in upcoming games.
