Uncertainty Surrounds New York Jets’ Offensive Play-Calling
In a potential shake-up within the New York Jets‘ coaching staff, Nathaniel Hackett may soon be relieved of his play-calling duties as offensive coordinator. This comes amid speculations about assigning these responsibilities to Todd Downing, the current passing game coordinator. Reports indicate that the suggestion was initially considered by former head coach Robert Saleh and might also be under review by interim coach Jeff Ulbrich, according to SNY.
During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN‘s Adam Schefter mentioned the possibility of Downing assuming a more prominent role in the Jets’ offensive strategies. “I’m reading between the lines, but… I’m led to believe that Todd Downing could be calling plays for the New York Jets,” Schefter stated.
The underperformance of New York’s offense this NFL season has fueled fans’ discontent with Hackett’s leadership of the unit. Despite the presence of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the team’s offensive performance remains one of the league’s weakest in the 2023 season.
However, the potential promotion of Todd Downing as offensive play-caller may not offer significant improvement. Downing, aged 44, has previously served as an offensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans and Oakland Raiders. His previous offenses ranked no higher than 17th in total yards or 15th in points, raising questions about his efficacy in enhancing New York’s performance.
Further complicating the situation is Rodgers’ performance, which seems reminiscent of his final year with the Green Bay Packers. With 1,093 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions across five starts, Rodgers ranks low in quarterback ratings, sparking concerns about his current form.
The Jets are facing pressure to make strategic adjustments. Suggestions of a trade for Las Vegas Raiders star Davante Adams have surfaced, although such a move appears challenging under current conditions. As the organization evaluates its coaching staff under Ulbrich, fans remain cautious about its trajectory amid these transitional discussions, emphasizing the need for proven effectiveness rather than familiar faces.
