TAMPA, Fla. — Jake Guentzel, an underrated forward in the NHL, is set to showcase his skills as the Tampa Bay Lightning face the Florida Panthers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round on Tuesday. Guentzel, known for his exceptional hockey IQ rather than speed or size, begins his seventh playoff run after signing a seven-year, $63 million contract with the Lightning last July.

Despite criticisms about not being the fastest or strongest player, Guentzel has proven his worth on the ice. His teammate, Brayden Point, emphasizes Guentzel’s intelligence, noting, “He’s so smart out there. He’s in the right spots and reads the game really well.” Guentzel’s game awareness is invaluable, allowing him and his teammates to anticipate plays several steps ahead.

Throughout his career, Guentzel has consistently overachieved expectations. He was part of the Pittsburgh Penguins‘ championship team in 2017 during his rookie season and has maintained a strong performance record since. In nine seasons, he has accumulated 571 regular season points and 67 playoff points, highlighting his scoring ability despite his smaller stature of 5-foot-11.

At the University of Omaha-Nebraska, Guentzel dedicated himself to the sport, often being the first to arrive for practice. Coach Dean Blais recognized his commitment and skillset early on, saying, “He’s got a lot of hockey sense… He was mentally ready every game.” This preparation has been critical in developing Guentzel’s successful playing style.

Lightning coach Jon Cooper recently remarked on Guentzel’s capacity to compete with elite players, particularly during international play. This reputation follows him into the playoffs, where he looks to improve on his performance with Tampa Bay. As Guentzel prepares to take the ice, he reflects on his love for hockey and his lifelong dedication to the game.

“I just love the game,” Guentzel said. “I watch the game. I’m just all around the game — at night, it’s all I do is just watch hockey.” With this passion and determination, Guentzel aims to demonstrate his true potential in the upcoming series.
