D.C. United Hosts New York Red Bulls in Rivalry Match

WASHINGTON, D.C. — D.C. United will face off against long-time rivals the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, May 24, at Audi Field, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
The Black-and-Red (3-6-5) come into the match fresh off a thrilling penalty shootout victory against Charlotte FC in the Round of 16 of the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this past Wednesday, May 21. The game ended in a 2-2 draw after regulation, with defender Garrison Tubbs scoring a critical equalizer in the 86th minute. After trailing 3-2, homegrown midfielder Jackson Hopkins scored again in the 104th minute, securing the team’s advancement to penalties. Goalkeeper Jordan Farr, who was substituted in for his penalty-saving prowess, saved four of five Charlotte attempts, leading D.C. into the tournament quarterfinals for the first time since 2013.
Christian Benteke remains sidelined with an injury, meaning the Black-and-Red will look to other players for scoring. In their last encounter against the Red Bulls on April 19, João Peglow’s two goals helped D.C. secure their first away win of the season. Goalie Luis Barraza has also been impressive this season, recording 30 saves and two shutouts over seven matches.
The New York Red Bulls (5-6-3) come into this rivalry match having won their recent Open Cup game against FC Dallas, also in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw. However, they lost 2-0 to New York City FC in their previous MLS fixture on May 17. D.C. United will need to pay close attention to Red Bulls player Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who has scored seven goals this season, and Emil Forsberg, who has netted five.
In the previous meeting between the clubs in April, D.C. United overcame a tough challenge after losing Benteke early in the match. Despite the Red Bulls’ efforts to rally back, including a goal from Choupo-Moting in the second half, D.C. held onto their lead for a crucial victory.
Fans can watch the match through the MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, which allows for comprehensive coverage of every game, and radio broadcasts will be available on 1190 iHeart Sports DC.
Supporters are encouraged to arrive early as the atmosphere promises to be electric, with D.C. United looking to secure another statement victory over their rivals.
