United States Defeats Canada In First Leg Of World Rugby U20 Trophy Qualifier Series

The first match of the North America qualifier series for the World Rugby U20 Trophy took place at Shawnigan Lake School, where the United States secured a 33-18 victory over Canada in an intense showdown.

Starting strong, the United States quickly gained a 7-0 lead, but Canada clawed back with precise plays, narrowing the gap to 7-6 with successful penalty kicks by Matthew Bennett.

Just before halftime, Canada surged ahead with a try from Patrick Kirwan, outmaneuvering the American defense and giving Canada an 11-7 lead.

After the break, a yellow card against the United States provided Canada with a player advantage, resulting in Garin Schroeder’s try off a maul and a successful conversion by Bennett, extending Canada’s lead to 18-7.

The United States, however, mounted a strong comeback, scoring two crucial tries to edge ahead 19-18. Despite another yellow card, Canada couldn’t capitalize, and two rapid tries from Corbin Smith in the final minutes sealed the win for the United States at 33-18.

Christiaan Esterhuizen, Head Coach of Canada’s U20 Men’s Rugby Team, expressed disappointment at the result but praised his team’s tactical approach. He highlighted Canada’s strong performance in the scrums, winning multiple penalties, and emphasized the need to minimize errors and improve the kicking game for the upcoming crucial match.

The second leg of the qualifier series will take place at Starlight Stadium in Langford, BC, offering another chance for Canada to overturn the deficit and secure a spot in the World Rugby U20 Trophy. Rugby enthusiasts can catch the action on Thursday, June 6, with entry by donation to support the U20 men’s program.
