University of Pretoria Appoints Prof Francis Petersen as Next Vice-Chancellor

The University of Pretoria (UP) has announced the appointment of Professor Francis Petersen as its new Vice-Chancellor and Principal, effective from 1st October 2024. This strategic move is set to usher in a new era of academic excellence and innovative leadership at UP.

Professor Petersen brings with him a wealth of experience and a distinguished track record from his tenure at the University of the Free State (UFS), where he has held the role of Vice-Chancellor and Principal since April 1, 2017.

Mr. David Noko, Chairperson of the UFS Council, lauded Prof Petersen’s tenure, stating that his leadership was characterized by excellence, inclusivity, and a focus on social responsiveness and integrity.

As Prof Petersen prepares to transition to his new role at UP, he expressed his pride in the accomplishments at UFS and his gratitude for the support and collaboration received within the university community.

The UFS Council will appoint an acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal to serve from 1st October 2024 until a new permanent appointee is selected, a decision eagerly anticipated by the university community.

In a statement, UP welcomed Prof Petersen, expressing enthusiasm for his arrival and highlighting his extensive experience in higher education and leadership. The university looks forward to a new era of excellence under his guidance.
