University of Richmond Women’s Tennis Falls to UMass in Close Match

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women’s tennis team experienced heartbreak Saturday as they lost a closely contested match to Massachusetts, 4-3, at home. The defeat dropped the Spiders’ record to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, while UMass improved to 7-5 and 2-0 in league competition.

The match began positively for Richmond, who claimed the doubles point. The duo of Bakhaya and Campodonico defeated UMass’s Campino and Jonglertrakul with a score of 6-3 on court one. Richmond sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 victory on court three from O’Neil and Le Du against UMass’s Makhanya and Pavissich. The match on court two, featuring Barbulescu and Novak from Richmond against Tye and Faessler from UMass, remained unfinished, with Richmond leading 5-3.

Singles play was a different story. UMass struck early as Campino defeated Richmond’s Barbulescu 6-2, 6-2 on court one. Faessler followed suit with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over Campodonico at court two, nudging UMass ahead 2-0. However, Richmond rallied back, with a compelling performance from Le Du on court six, defeating Makhanya 6-1, 6-2 to tie the match at 2-2.

UMass quickly reclaimed the lead on court five, where Pavissich edged out Novak 6-4, 7-5. Richmond responded once again, leveling the score at 3-3 thanks to Bakhaya’s clutch win over Jonglertrakul, 6-4, 7-6 (3) on court three.

The deciding match came down to court four, where Richmond’s Lee took the first set 6-2 against Tye. However, Tye made a comeback, winning the next two sets 7-5, 6-1, ultimately clinching the victory for UMass at 4-3.
