ATLANTA, Feb. 5, 2025 — The Unrivaled 1-on-1 tournament began Monday, showcasing elite women’s basketball players competing for a $200,000 grand prize. Eight first-round matchups highlighted the opening night, featuring unexpected upsets and standout performances.
Among the most surprising results was two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart, who suffered a shocking 12-0 loss to Aaliyah Edwards. The tournament format pits players in single-elimination games played to 11 points, aiming to entertain fans and generate excitement.
“The competition level has been phenomenal, and the support from fans is incredible,” said co-founder Breanna Stewart, who faced Edwards in a highly anticipated matchup. “We wanted to create an event that showcases the best talent in women’s basketball, and the first night lived up to that vision.”
Napheesa Collier, another co-founder of Unrivaled, opened her tournament run with a 12-6 victory over Katie Lou Samuelson. Collier took an early 8-0 lead, allowing her to maintain control throughout the matchup.
Additionally, Shakira Austin grabbed attention with a defining upset over Chelsea Gray, winning 12-2. Despite giving up size to the 6’5″ Austin, the six-time All-Star Gray struggled to find her rhythm. “I just tried to play to my strengths and stay aggressive,” Austin commented post-game.
Capping the night, Skylar Diggins-Smith dispatched Dearica Hamby with a decisive 11-3 victory, hitting three three-pointers to enhance her scoring. “I felt great out there and was proud of my shot selection,” Diggins-Smith stated following her match.
The tournament continues through Feb. 14, featuring players such as Jewell Loyd and Arike Ogunbowale, who received first-round byes. Fans voted on the initial player seedings, adding an element of engagement and anticipation to the event.
The competition has attracted significant attention, with a total prize pool of $350,000, ensuring ample incentive for players. The runner-up will receive $50,000, and semifinalists will take home $25,000 each, while the winner’s teammates are set to benefit as well.
As the one-on-one saga unfolds, spectators can look forward to thrilling matchups in later rounds, including potential clashes between Ogunbowale and Skylar Diggins-Smith, both of whom bring substantial scoring credentials and accolades.
