Urban Meyer Rules Out Return to Coaching Amid FBS Openings
Columbus, Ohio — Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has stated he is not interested in returning to coaching, despite the growing number of FBS openings. This season alone, eight jobs in the Power Four have opened, including at prestigious programs like LSU, where Meyer previously won national championships.
“I don’t have a desire,” Meyer said, making it clear he is not looking to resume coaching. Since his firing from the Jacksonville Jaguars in December 2021, the coaching landscape has changed significantly, with numerous vacancies arising in major college football.
Only five Power Four jobs opened last year, revealing a notable increase in opportunities this season compared to the last. Athletic directors affiliated with these programs may need to consider hiring unproven coaches or high-profile coordinators to find suitable candidates for leadership roles.
Among the rising star coaches, Meyer has specifically mentioned Brian Hartline, who is currently serving as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator. Hartline, a former players’ coach, has developed a strong reputation as a recruiter and is praised for his role in directing one of the nation’s top offenses.
Meyer expressed his admiration for Hartline, saying, “I’m a big Brian Hartline fan, always have been. He just needs the experience.” Hartline’s work has propelled the Buckeyes to lead the FBS in offensive success rate and rank 21st in scoring offense this season.
With head coach Ryan Day at Ohio State firmly in position following last season’s national championship win, Hartline might need to seek a new opportunity to advance his career. Despite speculation linking him to the Penn State head coaching vacancy, he remains committed to Ohio State for now.
Meyer’s endorsement of Hartline adds to the buzz surrounding him as a potential head coach, a decision that could affect the Buckeyes should he eventually leave. As the speculation grows on Hartline’s future, the Ohio State community watches closely.
