Usa Canada Hockey Game February 2025

MONTREAL, Canada — In a thrilling matchup emblematic of their historic rivalry, the United States defeated Canada 3-1 on Saturday night at the Bell Centre, securing a spot in the championship game of the 4 Nations Face-Off. This marks the first time the U.S. has triumphed over Canada in best-on-best men’s hockey since the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The U.S. victory guarantees them a position in the finals scheduled for Thursday at TD Garden in Boston. Dylan Larkin propelled the Americans, scoring the go-ahead goal in the second period to contribute to the win.

“That was one of the best experiences of my life,” Larkin said afterward. “Just an unbelievable hockey game. The crowd, just a great night for our sport and a great night for this rivalry.”

Canada controlled the early momentum, with Connor McDavid netting the first goal just over five minutes into the game. McDavid’s goal came after a remarkable solo effort, as he burst past defenders and executed a beautiful backhand shot past U.S. goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck.

However, the Americans quickly responded, with Jake Guentzel scoring to level the game at 1-1. The play was set up by Jack Eichel, who maneuvered through traffic to make the assist. In the second period, Larkin capitalized on a defensive miscue from Canada, firing a shot past Canada’s Jordan Binnington to put the U.S. ahead for good.

“It was fast, tight-checking, competitive, emotional. It had everything you would want in a hockey game,” McDavid said after the game. “It sucks it didn’t go our way, but this thing’s far from over.”

U.S. head coach Mike Sullivan praised Larkin’s performance, highlighting his impactful presence in a pivotal game. Larkin’s promotion to center for this match proved beneficial as he adapted well to the more significant role.

The U.S. played a disciplined game, outshooting Canada 30-25 while effectively neutralizing their offensive threats.Connor Hellebuyck was instrumental in the victory, making crucial saves to keep the U.S. in the lead. His efforts allowed the Americans to maintain their composure, even as Canada ramped up their offensive pressure late in the game.

As the game progressed, tensions escalated, particularly with the Tkachuk brothers on opposing teams. Jacob Tkachuk’s brawl with brother Matthew during the first period electrified the crowd, adding to the intensity of the rivalry.

The tournament utilized a round-robin format, where teams compete against each other, and this match counted toward determining the finalists. The U.S. clinched their place in the final match by outperforming both Canada and Finland in previous rounds.

The 4 Nations Face-Off has served as a notable alternative to the NHL’s All-Star Game this year, showcasing elite talent in high-stakes competition. Following this victory, the U.S. looks to secure the championship title in Boston as they continue their quest to reaffirm their prowess on the international stage.

Matthew Tkachuk remained in high spirits post-game, commenting on the atmosphere and energy from the crowd: “The crowds are always electric in games like these. It’s what makes rivalries like this so special.”

Canada must now prepare for their next matchup against Finland while awaiting confirmation on the availability of star player Cale Makar, who was sidelined due to illness.
