Usman Tariq’s Journey from Salesman to Pakistan’s T20I Star
NEW DELHI, India — Usman Tariq, a 27-year-old cricket player from Pakistan, has made headlines after leaving his stable job in Dubai to pursue his cricket dreams. Recently called up to Pakistan’s T20I squad for a series against South Africa, Tariq’s journey was inspired by the Bollywood film about cricket legend MS Dhoni.
Tariq left cricket several years ago after failing to make the selection but found inspiration to return after watching “MS Dhoni: The Untold Story.” He explained, “I did not get selected, and I was working as a salesman in a purchasing company in Dubai. The movie inspired me a lot. I left the job and came back to Pakistan to pursue cricket again,” he told Telecom Asia Sport.
This decision has proven fruitful. Tariq took 20 wickets in the 2025 Caribbean Premier League, where he ranked just behind veteran players. His unique side-arm bowling action, which some initially questioned, was deemed legal following biomechanical testing in Lahore.
“I was born with a unique right elbow which has two corners,” Tariq explained, clarifying the origin of his distinctive style. He added, “I just want to play for Pakistan and perform. It took a long time to reach here, but every setback has made me stronger.”
As he prepares for potential international debut, Tariq’s journey highlights the theme of resilience and following one’s dreams, proving that inspiration can spark significant change.
