Us Women National Team Celebration Win

GLENDALE, Ariz. (Feb. 23, 2025) — The U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) delivered a standout performance, defeating Australia 2-1 on Sunday in the SheBelieves Cup, propelling them toward their quest for a sixth consecutive tournament title.

In front of 23,503 fans at State Farm Stadium, the U.S. opened the scoring just 41 seconds into the match when Lynn Biyendolo, formerly Williams, scored her 22nd international goal. This early strike set the tone for an impressive display from a team that saw all 11 starters replaced from their previous game.

“I just want to get to know the players and build good connections,” Biyendolo said following the match. “It felt great to score so early and contribute to the team’s performance.”

Michelle Cooper also made an impact, scoring her first international goal in the 68th minute shortly after entering the match, putting the U.S. ahead 2-0. Cooper’s goal came just six minutes after Biyendolo’s, showcasing the depth and talent of the U.S. squad.

Australia fought back in the 80th minute when substitute Michelle Heyman scored off a cross, but the U.S. defense held strong to secure the win.

Director Emma Hayes made history with a complete lineup overhaul, which was the first time in 25 years that the USWNT started a match with all 11 new players. This decision highlights her dedication to developing young talent as the team looks ahead to the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

“It was surreal to be part of such a pivotal moment,” Cooper added, reflecting on her goal. “Ally Sentnor and I had great team chemistry, and it’s exciting to see our hard work pay off.”

The U.S. will face Japan on February 26 in San Diego for the championship. Japan is also at the top of the standings with six points, having secured victories against Australia and Colombia during the tournament.

In addition to the team’s performance, the match marked a historic moment as sisters Alyssa and Gisele Thompson started together, making it the fourth instance in USWNT history that sisters have played in the same match.

Despite the victory, Australia outshot the U.S., 15-7, underscoring the competitive nature of international women’s soccer. However, with a solid defensive effort and key contributions from younger players, the U.S. aims to secure its eighth SheBelieves Cup title.
