SALT LAKE CITY — After a lengthy 13-month process, Utah‘s NHL franchise has officially rebranded as the Utah Mammoth. The name was revealed Wednesday following an unprecedented fan vote that garnered over 850,000 ballots in multiple rounds.

The change marks a permanent identity for the team, which temporarily operated under the name Utah Hockey Club during its inaugural season after relocating from Arizona. Smith Entertainment Group purchased the former Arizona Coyotes franchise and brought it to Salt Lake City.

Ryan and Ashley Smith, the team owners, emphasized community engagement in the naming process. “We did something unprecedented — going through four rounds of community voting to gather feedback not only on names but also potential logos,” they said in a statement. “The community chose the Utah Mammoth brand, and it stands as a symbol of who we are and where we came from.”

The team’s new logo features a mammoth’s head with a distinctive tusk design to evoke the letter “U” for Utah. The silhouettes of Utah’s Wasatch Mountains are also included, making it not just a logo but a representation of the state’s heritage.

Merchandise, including T-shirts and hats, became available at Delta Center on the same day as the announcement. A press conference, led by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, took place at 1 p.m. ET. The team plans to reveal a mascot in the coming months, highlighting the Mammoth theme.

The name “Mammoth” was chosen to honor the prehistoric animal that once roamed Utah over 10,000 years ago. The concept resonates with local history, as fossils have continuously been discovered around the state, including a complete skeleton found in Huntington Canyon in 1988. The Mammoth’s historical significance aligns well with the team’s local identity and spirit.

In terms of aesthetics, the Mammoth team will keep its original colors — Rock Black, Salt White, and Mountain Blue — but with updated logos. The home jerseys will include the new primary logo prominently displayed on the front, while away jerseys will emphasize the state’s name to enhance representation during away games.

As Utah prepares for its second season, it looks forward to participating in the NHL draft, where they will use their new branding.
