Utah Utes Quarterback Cam Rising Injury

The University of Utah‘s football team is set to face significant challenges as their starting quarterback, Cam Rising, has been declared out for the remainder of the season due to a lower leg injury. The announcement came from Utah’s head coach, Kyle Whittingham, who disclosed that true freshman Isaac Wilson will step into the role of starting quarterback until further notice.

Rising’s injury occurred in the team’s match against the Arizona State Sun Devils, where his leg was bent backward awkwardly during a tackle on the Utes’ first drive. Despite continuing to play, Rising struggled with mobility and accuracy, completing just 43% of his passes and throwing three interceptions. Previously, Rising had missed three games due to an injury to his throwing hand, and he sat out the entire 2023 season after a knee injury during the Rose Bowl.

Coach Whittingham expressed a sense of loss for the team, stating, “During his time at Utah, Cam has been both a great player and leader for our program, and he will obviously be missed.” Whittingham also mentioned the possibility of Rising considering a medical waiver for an eighth season, hinting at unresolved questions about his future in college football.

Isaac Wilson, the younger brother of NFL quarterback Zach Wilson, has been designated as Rising’s replacement. Wilson previously filled in during Rising’s earlier absence, leading the team to a 2-1 record while amassing 726 yards and five touchdowns, though he also threw five interceptions. Whittingham expressed confidence in Wilson’s abilities, noting, “We feel like the quarterback position is stable. We just don’t have Cam.”

In related developments, former Utah Utes head coach Ron McBride shared his perspective on the KSL’s Football Friday program, stating his belief that Rising might play his final season at a different school if he chooses to seek an eighth year. McBride’s comments have attracted attention, suggesting a potential shift in the team’s leadership and future planning with Wilson as the new starting quarterback.

Rising, who has been instrumental in Utah’s recent successes, including two conference championships, is also represented by a history marked by injury setbacks. As the Utes navigate this challenging period, McBride’s remarks may signal a transitional phase in the program’s quarterback strategy.
