Rick Carlisle Indiana Pacers Coach

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Ryan Odom, the newly appointed head coach of the University of Virginia men’s basketball team, finds inspiration in Rick Carlisle, an esteemed alumnus and current head coach of the Indiana Pacers. Their recent meeting before a critical playoff game revealed Odom’s admiration for Carlisle, who has successfully adapted to changing styles in professional basketball.

The encounter took place in late May at Madison Square Garden, where Odom, feeling nervous, watched Carlisle prepare for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Knicks. ‘I was a bit nervous,’ Odom admitted, noting Carlisle’s calm demeanor as the clock ticked down before the game.

As the Pacers advanced to the NBA Finals, where they are currently tied 1-1 with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Carlisle stands on the verge of history. With three more victories, he could become the fourth coach to lead two different teams to NBA championships. He previously won a title with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011.

A University of Virginia graduate and psychology major, Carlisle co-captained the Cavaliers to the Final Four in 1984. Now, he ranks among the NBA’s top 11 coaches all-time in wins. ‘He’s one of the best to ever do it,’ Odom said of Carlisle.

Odom’s connection to Carlisle stretches back to 1982, when Carlisle, known for his competitive nature, also served as a caregiver for him. ‘He was really competitive and a great leader,’ Odom recalled. ‘That’s certainly continued into his coaching career.’

As Odom embarks on his journey to lead his fourth different program to the NCAA Tournament, he cites Carlisle’s ability to adjust to different coaching environments as a key lesson. ‘I’ve been really impressed by his ability to do it at different places with different styles,’ Odom said.

Besides his impressive career, Carlisle remains dedicated to his alma mater, making frequent appearances at reunions and maintaining contact with former colleagues. Their chat in the visiting locker room showcased his genuine interest in Odom’s family and team development.

‘He wanted to know how we’re going to play and the style,’ Odom noted. ‘But I know he’s excited about what’s to come here as well.’

With the potential for another championship ring, Carlisle’s ongoing success resonates with the UVA community, inspiring future generations of players and coaches alike. ‘His success really is impactful for our program, and it certainly is impactful for UVA overall,’ Odom concluded.
