Uzbekistan Jordan World Cup Qualifiers

HONG KONG, June 5 (Reuters) – Uzbekistan and Jordan are set to chase their first World Cup appearances as they aim to secure qualification to the 2026 tournament. The two teams will compete in crucial matches on Thursday, while South Korea is also closing in on a spot.

Timur Kapadze’s Uzbekistan will face the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi, where a draw will guarantee them a place among the 48 nations in North America. Meanwhile, Jordan needs a win against Oman to also reach the World Cup.

South Korea, a regular at the World Cup, needs just a draw against Iraq in Basra to confirm their participation for the 11th consecutive time. Japan and Iran have already secured two of Asia’s eight guaranteed spots in the tournament. The remaining countries in third and fourth place have a chance to advance through further playoffs.

Uzbekistan sits second in Group A with a total of 15 points, trailing Iran by three points. The draw against UAE will secure their spot due to their four-point lead over the third-placed UAE.

South Korea leads Group B with 16 points and is keen to secure their qualification early. Coach Hong Myung-bo believes Iraq will be a tough opponent despite South Korea’s higher FIFA ranking. “I trust my players. They’ve done a great job so far,” Hong said.

Jordan, currently in second place in their group, will strive to clinch their first-ever World Cup ticket, while Iraq, in third place, must earn points to keep their hopes alive. The tension builds as time runs out in this qualification round.

“We’ve been working hard as a team, and I believe we will be able to come away with a good result,” said South Korean midfielder Hwang In-beom, highlighting the team’s preparation.

As the final matches of the qualifying rounds approach, the stakes are higher than ever for these teams aiming for glory on the world stage.
