Van Lith Faces Former Team in NCAA Second Round Showdown

FORT WORTH, Texas — Hailey Van Lith finds herself in an unexpected matchup as the TCU Horned Frogs prepare to take on her former team, the Louisville Cardinals, in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament on Sunday. After successful stints at Louisville and LSU, Van Lith is looking to lead TCU deeper into the tournament in her final collegiate season.
Van Lith, who is averaging 17.9 points per game, expressed mixed emotions about playing against Louisville, where she starred for three seasons. “I understand the narrative that’s being painted. It doesn’t necessarily align with where I’m at mentally or emotionally. And that’s OK,” she said during a press conference. “I’m at a really good spot. I’m excited to play.”
The journey for Van Lith to TCU began after her time at Louisville, where she averaged 15.4 points over her three years and helped the Cardinals reach the Final Four and two Elite Eights. Following a season at LSU that raised questions about her role on the team, Van Lith transferred to TCU, a program that had not reached the NCAA tournament in 15 years before this season.
TCU coach Mark Campbell praised Van Lith’s impact on the team, saying, “For what she’s done in one season, really it’s nine months, it’s incredible. Man, I wish we had her back for one more year.” During TCU’s tournament opener against Fairleigh Dickinson, Van Lith contributed 13 points and seven assists to help the Frogs advance.
Van Lith’s ability to perform under pressure is crucial for TCU, especially against a seasoned Louisville team. “We had a little bit of nerves,” she reflected on the previous game, acknowledging both the excitement and tension that come with NCAA play. “But if you’ve had a good amount of success in March Madness, you kind of know what it feels like,” she added.
This matchup comes after a missed opportunity last year when Louisville suffered an unexpected loss in the first round, preventing a face-off with LSU and Van Lith. Louisville head coach Jeff Walz commented on her development since her transfer, noting, “She graduated college in three years, which nobody really talks about, and they should.”
As fans gear up for the reunion, those close to Van Lith, including former teammates, have shared their excitement and support. Olivia Cochran, a current member of the Cardinals, said, “It’s just going to be a ballgame. That’s all I’ve got to say. Go Cards.”
With both teams looking for their first Sweet 16 appearance this season, the stakes are high. Van Lith remains focused on the game ahead, stating, “I love to compete, and it’s in God’s hands. Whatever is going to happen is going to happen.”
