VAR Unavailability Looms Over Upcoming LigaPro Match Due to Landslide

LOJA, Ecuador — A significant logistical challenge is set to affect the LigaPro match between Libertad and Barcelona on March 1 at 7 p.m. local time, as heavy rainfall has caused landslides that threaten the arrival of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) equipment.
According to Miguel Ángel Loor, president of LigaPro, the situation arises from adverse weather conditions leading to road blockages, notably on a highway located two hours from Loja. The integrity of travel routes has caused delays, putting into question whether the VAR can be operational for the match.
“Out of nearly 400 matches played with VAR in LigaPro, we have rarely faced issues with road conditions or transport within our country,” Loor said in a statement on X. “However, this time we are experiencing a landslide just two hours from Loja, which has left the VAR transport truck unable to proceed.”
Efforts are underway to clear the debris with the use of backhoes and other machinery, but progress has been slow. Loor added, “It is very complicated to resolve the problem quickly. If the situation remains unchanged, the match will be played without VAR, and both clubs have already been informed.”
The match between Libertad and Barcelona will take place at the Estadio Reina del Cisne, and as it stands, the absence of VAR during this important clash poses additional concerns regarding making accurate officiating decisions.
