Vermont Offers Free Tax Filing Assistance for Low-Income Residents
SOUTH ROYALTON, Vt. (WCAX) – As tax season approaches, Vermont Law and Graduate School is stepping up to help low-income residents and older Vermonters file their taxes for free. The school is hosting a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site, sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), as part of a statewide effort to provide accessible tax preparation services.
The VITA program offers free electronic filing for both federal and state taxes to individuals with a family income of $67,000 or less. Volunteers from the IRS and the Vermont Department of Taxes are available to assist eligible taxpayers, including those with limited English proficiency. Appointments are required and can be scheduled by calling 802-831-1363.
Tax day is April 15, and the VITA sites aim to alleviate the stress of filing for those who may struggle with the process. Similar sites are operating across Vermont, ensuring that residents in various communities have access to this critical service.
