Veronika Erjavec Advances to Semifinals at Megasaray Hotels Open

ANTALYA, Turkey — Slovak tennis player Veronika Erjavec advanced to the semifinals of the Megasaray Hotels Open 2, defeating Argentinian Maria Lourdes Carle 1-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2 on Friday. Erjavec, currently ranked No. 154 in the world, will face Andorran Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva in the next round.
In her quarterfinal match, Erjavec displayed resilience, recovering from a set down to secure her victory over Carle, who is ranked No. 97 and was the tournament’s No. 5 seed. Earlier in the tournament, Erjavec had also bested Swiss Jil Teichmann, the No. 4 seed, with a score of 6-2, 6-4, and defeated Chinese player Xinyu Gao 7-5, 7-6 (5).
Carle reached the quarterfinals after defeating Spanish Leyre Romero Gormaz and Romanian Ana Bogdan, showcasing her skills throughout the tournament.
“It was a challenging match, especially after losing the first set,” Erjavec said. “But my focus and determination helped me turn it around.”
Meanwhile, in other notable matches at the Megasaray Hotels Open, No. 6 seed Anca Todoni captured her third WTA 125 title by defeating Leyre Romero Gormaz 6-3, 6-2 in the final. Turning 20 this week, Todoni has previously won two WTA 125 titles this year in Bari and Santa Cruz, both on clay courts.
The Romanian talent, who made her Top 100 debut this week at No. 100, demonstrated her power with a first-serve success rate of 67% during the final. “I felt in control throughout the match,” Todoni said. “Winning this title gives me a big confidence boost as I move forward in the season.”
In her semifinal match, Todoni faced off against Clara Burel, a former No. 42 player who made her return after a three-month layoff. Their match ended prematurely when Burel retired due to a low back injury, giving Todoni the path to the final.
Overall, the competition at the Megasaray Hotels Open showcased a mix of experienced players and rising stars, with several unexpected upsets, including the first-round exits of the top two seeded players, Emiliana Arango and Diane Parry.
As the tournament progresses, fans are eager to see how Erjavec’s journey unfolds, as she aims to continue her strong performance against Jimenez Kasintseva.
