Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Qualifying Max Verstappen

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia — Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing clinched pole position for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with a thrilling performance during qualifying on Saturday, setting the stage for an exciting race on Sunday. The session showcased intense competition, with Verstappen finishing just 0.001 seconds ahead of fellow contender Oscar Piastri.

The qualifying event took place under the luminous lights of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, where Verstappen’s strategy of two flying laps paid off. “To be first here in qualifying is of course the best position for tomorrow, even though I think in the race it will be difficult to keep them behind,” Verstappen said post-session.

Piastri, who drives for McLaren, expressed surprise and excitement at his competitive positioning, highlighting the adrenaline rush of the qualifying session. “A lot of adrenaline. I’m shaking a little bit,” Piastri noted. “I definitely didn’t expect to be on pole here.”

The qualifying results revealed a high level of intensity, particularly from drivers such as George Russell and Charles Leclerc, who joined Verstappen and Piastri on the front row. Behind them, Lando Norris faced a setback, starting from 10th place after a challenging qualifying session. Norris leads the championship standings but now faces pressure to maintain his lead as the season unfolds.

“I had been heavily in contention for pole,” Norris reflected, admitting the situation was disappointing as he aims for his first pole of the season. Currently, he sits three points ahead of Piastri and eight ahead of Verstappen in the championship standings.

As qualifying concluded, the starting grid emerged with Verstappen at the top, followed closely by Piastri and Russell. Behind them, Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli rounded out the top five spots, marking a strong showing for the various teams involved.

The race weekend has generated significant attention, particularly regarding Verstappen’s future. He has been open about his dissatisfaction with certain aspects of his car’s performance. “I’m just not very happy with our car,” he emphasized, adding to the ongoing speculation about potential moves for the driver, whose talent has been recognized across the paddock.

Fans can catch the action live on networks such as Sky Sports F1 in the UK and ESPN in the United States, with the race scheduled to begin at 1 PM ET on Sunday. The anticipation builds as the 2025 Formula 1 season continues excitingly with its latest round.
