Vikings Consider Daniel Jones as Potential Backup for Playoffs
The Minnesota Vikings are contemplating a significant change to their quarterback depth chart, potentially positioning newcomer Daniel Jones as the backup to starter Sam Darnold for the playoffs. This move comes after Darnold’s inconsistent performance in the regular season, including a particularly rough outing in the season finale against the Detroit Lions.
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has not confirmed whether Jones or current backup Nick Mullens will be the No. 2 quarterback for the upcoming wild-card game. O’Connell stated, ‘We’re doing everything we can to get Sam ready to go, but at the same time, whether it’s Nick or Daniel or Brett [Rypien], having all those guys absorbing the game plan like always. It’s such a fluid thing here the rest of the way. We’re going to do whatever we think gives us the best chance to win.’
Jones, who was released by the New York Giants earlier this season, joined the Vikings’ practice squad in late November. He has since been promoted to the 53-man roster, giving the team a chance to evaluate him further. Jones, a former first-round pick, brings playoff experience, having led the Giants to a wild-card victory over the Vikings in 2022.
The potential shift comes at a critical time, as Darnold struggled in the Vikings’ final regular-season game, completing just 34.5% of his passes and missing several open receivers. If Darnold falters or gets injured, Jones could step in to lead the team in the postseason.
