Vikings’ Quarterback Dilemma: McCarthy Eyeing Starting Role Amid Offseason Changes

EAGAN, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings are actively addressing their quarterback situation as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah stated that naming the starting quarterback is an important goal, following a busy offseason and multiple roster changes.
After a disappointing playoff exit following a 14-3 season in 2024, the Vikings are looking to solidify their leadership under center. McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 draft, has emerged as a leading candidate for the starting position, though he has yet to receive official confirmation from the organization.
“They haven’t told me, and I’m happy they didn’t, because I try to earn it every single day,” McCarthy said about the starting quarterback job. “I never want that to be given to me. It’s such a privilege and an opportunity to give me that chance. I’m just gonna make the most of it every single day.”
The Vikings shockingly let last season’s starter, Sam Darnold, sign a three-year deal with the Washington Commanders. Darnold had been instrumental in the team’s success but is now pursuing a new opportunity. Meanwhile, the Vikings have opted not to pursue veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers despite earlier speculation.
McCarthy showed promise in his rookie season but was sidelined early in the preseason due to a torn meniscus. After multiple surgeries, he expressed confidence in his recovery: “I would say I’m 100 percent,” he stated. “Just staying consistent with the rehab process and not wavering from that.”
The Vikings have also signed J.J. McCarthy, another promising quarterback, leaving them with strong competition for the starting role. McCarthy will be joined by head coach Kevin O’Connell’s strategic offensive approach and a talent-rich support cast, including standout wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
Adofo-Mensah indicated that while the team is satisfied with its current roster, they are also considering adding another veteran quarterback before the regular season. “We’re responding to scenarios and different information as it comes,” he explained.
As offseason activities begin, McCarthy has been cleared for participation and is eager to show the team’s decision-makers that he is ready to lead. “At every checkpoint, whether it’s been the draft process or practice until the injury and really the offseason now, he’s met the bar,” Adofo-Mensah said in support of McCarthy.
The Vikings will continue to evaluate their quarterback options as they prepare for OTAs and mini-camp, expected to take place later in the spring. For now, McCarthy remains the frontrunner to take the first-team reps, hoping to secure his spot as the starting quarterback.
