Virat Kohli Bids Farewell to T20 Internationals Following India’s T20 World Cup Victory
India‘s iconic cricketer Virat Kohli has formally announced his retirement from T20 International cricket post India’s triumph in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. The declaration came right after Kohli was named the Player of the Match for his game-changing 76 off 59 deliveries against South Africa in the enthralling final at Barbados‘ Kensingston Oval on June 29. It was indeed a befitting end to Kohli’s T20I career.
Virat Kohli’s stellar performance in the final, where he fought hard for India, marked his final appearance in a T20I match for the country. His decision to step down and allow the new generation of cricketers to steer the team forward was made without hesitation.
Throughout his T20I journey, Kohli amassed a total of 4188 runs in 125 matches at an exceptional average of 48.69, with his highest knock being 122. The solitary T20 century he crafted was against Afghanistan back in September 2022.
Known for his ability to shine on grand stages, Kohli once again demonstrated his prowess in the title clash. This triumph was a moment of unadulterated joy for Kohli, particularly as his longtime comrade and captain, Rohit Sharma, clinched his second T20 World Cup trophy after the 2007 victory under the leadership of the legendary MS Dhoni.
Expressing his elation for Sharma’s achievement, Kohli acknowledged Sharma’s commendable journey through nine T20 World Cup tournaments, as compared to Kohli’s six appearances. Kohli stated that Sharma’s dedication and perseverance truly merited the acclaim garnered with this victory.
Kohli’s personal reflections unveiled a candid side of his character, as he acknowledged entering the final with a wavering confidence after a string of subdued performances in the earlier stages of the tournament. Despite the uncertainties, Kohli’s match-winning innings reflected a touch of divine grace and incredible resilience.
Emotions flooded Kohli post the victory, breaking the facade of his usual equanimity. This pinnacle in Kohli’s T20I career testified to his unwavering commitment to Indian cricket and his significance in the team’s history.
