RICHMOND, Va. — Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency as Virginia braces for a powerful winter storm expected to hit overnight Monday into Tuesday. The proclamation permits the mobilization of resources to address hazardous conditions that may arise, including heavy snowfall, ice, and potential flooding.
“With another round of winter weather across the state this week forecasted to bring heavy snow and ice, I am declaring a state of emergency so we can move resources around the state,” Youngkin stated. He urged Virginians to stay updated on local forecasts and prepare for possible impacts on roads and infrastructure.
The National Weather Service warns that parts of the state could see significant snowfall, freezing rain, and excessive rainfall. This combination raises concerns about power outages and dangerous travel conditions, prompting the activation of Virginia’s Emergency Support Team.
Officials are advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel. For those who must drive, state police and the Virginia Department of Transportation suggest several safety measures:
• Turn on headlights to enhance visibility in snowy or icy conditions.
• Slow down; speeding on slick roads can lead to accidents.
• Maintain a safe following distance for better stopping capability.
• Always buckle up, as seat belts are crucial in winter-weather crashes.
• Ensure vehicle readiness by checking gas levels, wipers, tire conditions, and battery life before departure.
• Pack an emergency kit with essentials like a window scraper, blanket, snacks, and a flashlight.
This is the second time this year that Governor Youngkin has declared a weather-related state of emergency. A severe winter storm in early January resulted in heavy snow and ice across Virginia, particularly affecting the Richmond area. On January 6, a power outage at the city’s water treatment plant resulted in widespread water distribution failures, leaving many residents without reliable water service for days.
This crisis led to boil-water advisories and highlighted the vulnerability of the region’s infrastructure to severe weather events. As Virginia anticipates the upcoming storm, officials emphasize the importance of preparedness and community awareness.
