Virginia Tech’s Tuten Aims for First Round in NFL Combine Spotlight

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The 2025 NFL Combine has kicked off, with six Virginia Tech Hokies showcasing their talents as they prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft in April. Among these athletes is running back Bhayshul Tuten, who addressed the media on Friday to discuss his journey and aspirations ahead of his on-field drills scheduled for Saturday at 1 PM ET.
Tuten expressed gratitude for his time at Virginia Tech, attributing his preparation for the NFL to the level of competition he faced and the coaching he received. “It definitely prepared me a lot. It taught me a lot. I’m going up against great competition and having coaches that have prepared me for this level is definitely a gift to go there and I am truly appreciative for it,” said Tuten.
Reflecting on his transition from the NCAA Transfer Portal, Tuten shared the challenges he faced during that time. “It was definitely a tough journey. I’m not going to lie, it was pretty stressful. A lot of teams were calling, and you had to weed out who you want to go to. I wasn’t originally committed to Virginia Tech. I ended up de-committing, flipping, and I felt Tech was the best option for me. It’s history from there.”
When asked to describe his playing style, Tuten highlighted his physicality and speed. “Tough and physical,” he stated. “I think I’m a back that likes to lower my shoulder and get the extra yards. I’m a speed back as well. I step up in pass-block and put my face in the fence, so I think toughness is the main word that I like to use.”
Tuten also spoke about his well-rounded skill set, stating, “That I am well-rounded. I am a level-headed guy. I’m willing to come in and just soak up as much as I can.” This adaptability is crucial as teams evaluate his potential contributions in various roles, including special teams, a vital part of many rookies’ careers.
<p"Yeah, I met with a lot of teams," Tuten mentioned regarding pre-draft interviews. "All of my interviews so far have been great. It's just the experience that I am looking for and I am just soaking it all up." Many teams have inquired about his capabilities in the return game, where he emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities. "Whatever opportunity that I need to do to get on the field and help the team in any way possible – I'm willing to do."
Tuten’s physical attributes have been a source of confidence. The 5-foot-8, 211-pound running back disclosed an interesting perspective on his success in evading tackles: “If I’m being honest – being short. I think it’s the best thing. Low center of gravity. Low to the ground. So that helps with a lot.” He added, “I’ve always had great balance and I’m a great athlete, so it is kind of natural, and my natural shortness helps a lot too.”
Throughout his season, Tuten has made headlines, notably with his record-setting performance against Boston College, where he ran for 266 yards and scored four total touchdowns. In discussing this performance, he credited his speed and highlighted how he excelled without his knee brace. “Speed is the biggest thing. That was the first game without my knee brace, and I think I popped off very fast and finished runs like I knew I could,” said Tuten.
With the Combine underway, analysts are predicting potential outcomes for Tuten’s draft stock. CBS Sports has him projected to go as high as the first round, while other sources suggest he could be selected on day three due to the depth of this year’s running back class. Despite varying opinions, Tuten remains focused on proving himself during the Combine’s drills.
As the draft approaches on April 24-26, Tuten’s performances at the Combine may prove crucial for his aspirations of being a first-round pick. NFL teams are undoubtedly watching closely as he seeks to make a lasting impression.
