BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — The cause of death for former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis was ruled “undetermined,” according to an autopsy report released by the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office on April 11, 2025. Davis, 35, was found unresponsive on April 1, 2024, at his grandmother’s home in Southwest Ranches, Florida.

Police have stated that foul play is not suspected in Davis’ death. The autopsy report noted that due to the totality of the circumstances, the cause and manner of death in this case were classified as undetermined, highlighting inconsistencies between the investigation scene and autopsy findings.

“Due to the extensive investigation and totality of the circumstances, including the inconsistencies between the scene and the findings at autopsy, the cause and manner of death in this case are best classified as undetermined,” the Medical Examiner’s statement indicated.

Details from the report included findings of blunt force injuries, such as a 1.5-inch red abrasion near Davis’ right eye and evidence of hemorrhage in the muscles of his back. However, the report did not specify how these injuries were suffered.

The toxicology report revealed the presence of several substances, including amphetamines/methamphetamines and cannabinoids. This raised questions about Davis’ health, particularly regarding a history of substance use.

Vernon Davis, Vontae’s brother and a former Pro Bowl tight end, expressed concerns over the circumstances surrounding his brother’s death. During previous statements, Vernon indicated that Vontae appeared to have collapsed after using a sauna but had no evident history of drug abuse.

“He didn’t have a history of drug use. This is all very puzzling,” Vernon Davis said in interviews.

Vontae Davis had a notable career in the NFL, being selected in the first round of the 2009 draft by the Miami Dolphins. He later played for the Indianapolis Colts, earning Pro Bowl selections in 2014 and 2015. He concluded his career after a brief stint with the Buffalo Bills, where he famously retired at halftime during a game in the 2018 season.

In total, Vontae played in 121 NFL games, recording 22 interceptions and 97 passes defensed. He was well known for his impressive defensive skills on the field.

Davis’ passing remains a mystery to fans and teammates alike, leaving the NFL community without the closure many hoped to find.
