OAKLAND, Calif. — The Golden State Warriors are surging with a remarkable 14-1 record since the acquisition of former Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler. Butler’s arrival has prompted renewed optimism as the team aims to maximize the championship window for four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry, especially following the recent return of 22-year-old forward Jonathan Kuminga after a lengthy injury hiatus.

The Warriors are reportedly considering a trade involving Kuminga, should there be a prolonged lack of chemistry between him and Butler, according to general manager Mike Dunleavy. One potential trade scenario would involve sending Kuminga to the struggling Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade agreement for seasoned scorer John Collins.

“The Warriors revived their season with the Jimmy Butler trade,” noted Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus. “The veteran wing signed an extension as part of the deal, locking in the core of Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Butler through 2026-27.”

As a restricted free agent this offseason, Kuminga’s future with the Warriors could hinge on contract negotiations. Pincus suggested that a significant decision lies ahead regarding his potential compensation, which could drive the payroll close to a restrictive second apron limit.

Trade discussions surrounding Kuminga could significantly shift if the star forward’s performance remains inconsistent. Pincus proposed that his new contract could serve as leverage in a trade for Collins, who could enhance Curry’s pursuit of a fifth title.

At just 27 years old, Collins has emerged as a reliable offensive asset, averaging 19.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game with the Jazz this season. His efficiency is noteworthy, shooting 52.7% from the floor and 39.9% from beyond the arc in 40 appearances.

“By partnering Collins and Curry as a lethal 1-2 punch, their screening actions could be dangerous for opposing defenders,” Pincus stated. Collins’ athleticism combined with their shooting skills could make them a formidable duo.

The 6-foot-9 forward excels as a rim-running threat and is adept at executing smart cuts and rolls to the basket. This season, he has converted an impressive 43.9% of his corner three-point attempts, making him an enticing option for drive-and-kick situations.

The potential acquisition of Collins in exchange for Kuminga could position the Warriors as serious contenders in the Western Conference for the 2025-26 season and beyond.
