Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga Returns to Practice After Ankle Injury

San Francisco, CA — Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has returned to practice following a lengthy recovery from a right ankle injury that sidelined him for 21 games. The 22-year-old last played on January 4 against the Memphis Grizzlies. His return comes just before the Warriors’ first game after the All-Star Weekend.
Warriors Public Relations announced on X that Kuminga practiced on Wednesday at Chase Center, marking his first time back with the team since sustaining the injury. A statement from the team noted, “His return to game action will be based on his continued progress and physical readiness.” Kuminga is not expected to participate in contact drills in the immediate future and will be on minutes restrictions when he returns to game play.
Steve Kerr, head coach of the Warriors, expressed optimism about Kuminga’s return. “Having Jonathan back gives us a significant boost, especially as we push for the playoffs,” Kerr said. “But we won’t rush him back into action.”
The Warriors are currently preparing to face the Sacramento Kings this Friday, where they hope to leverage their recent roster updates. Since acquiring Jimmy Butler in a multi-team trade with the Miami Heat, Golden State has recorded a 3-1 record, with Butler averaging 21.3 points per game.
In his earlier games this season, Kuminga averaged 16.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists. His scoring ability has made him a key contributor off the bench. As the Warriors navigate their playoff push, they are currently positioned at 28-27, sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference.
Executive Vice President Kirk Lacob recently indicated the team is committed to retaining Kuminga beyond this season, navigating the uncertainty of his rookie contract status. He stated, “One thing that’s always been true is Joe Lacob will spend what it takes to win. We have every ability to keep Jonathan Kuminga.”
With Kuminga still recovering, the Warriors will also focus on integrating their new players into their system as they prepare for a critical two-game road trip following the Kings matchup. The team is slated to face the Dallas Mavericks and the Charlotte Hornets next week.
As the Warriors look to capitalize on their season’s remaining games, they will need Kuminga’s contributions to strengthen their playoff aspirations. The anticipation surrounding his return adds excitement as the franchise seeks to regain momentum.
