Warriors Seek Revenge Against Mavericks in High-Stakes Showdown

SAN FRANCISCO, California – The Golden State Warriors prepare to face the Dallas Mavericks at Chase Center on Sunday, February 23, in a significant matchup with playoff implications. Having suffered a loss to the Mavericks just 11 days ago, the Warriors (29-27) look to avenge that defeat against a shorthanded Dallas team missing key players.
Kyrie Irving propelled the Mavericks (31-26) to victory during their last meeting, scoring an impressive 42 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. The Warriors enter this game with a renewed focus on defending against Irving, who leads the league in clutch scoring and is known for his uncanny ability to find the basket.
Brandin Podziemski is expected to take on the challenging task of guarding Irving, with assistance from teammates Moses Moody and Gary Payton II. Both Podziemski and his fellow starters, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler, will play a critical role in limiting Irving’s offensive production.
“Tomorrow, I’m picking up Kyrie at half court,” Podziemski stated after practice on Saturday. “I have that confidence that he’s going to get by me sometime – he’s a Hall of Famer – but I have guys behind me to help me. That voice that you hear with guys behind you gives you more confidence to be a little bit more aggressive.”
In their previous matchup, Irving’s performance stood out as he dominated the game without recording a single assist, a rarity for a point guard. He shot 15-of-25 from the field, including 7-of-10 from three-point range and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.
“He’s one of the best ever in isolation situations, one-on-one, getting shots off and being efficient with it,” Podziemski noted. “You can do a lot of film on it, but it’s in the moment. You’ve got to react to what he’s going to do.”
On the defensive front, the Warriors have managed commendable performances in their recent games. In a victory over the Sacramento Kings, they stifled high-scoring threats Zach LaVine and Malik Monk, limiting the duo to a combined 26 points on 11-of-23 shooting.
The Mavericks come into this game following a narrow victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. In that matchup, Irving once again shined, scoring 35 points while the team struggled against a strong performance from Pelicans’ star Zion Williamson, who scored 29 points.
As the stakes rise, both teams are geared up for intense competition, especially with playoff positioning on the line. The last meeting saw the Mavericks edge the Warriors 111-107, marking a crucial win in the ongoing season series, where Dallas currently leads 2-1.
