SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden State Warriors endured their worst home defeat in nearly four decades on Monday, falling 140-100 to the Boston Celtics at Chase Center. The 40-point loss marked the largest margin of defeat at home during the Steve Kerr era and the team’s lowest scoring output in a home game with Stephen Curry on the court under Kerr.

The Celtics (30-13), led by Jayson Tatum‘s 22 points and 20 made 3-pointers, dominated from start to finish. Curry, playing through multiple injuries, scored 18 points but was one of only two Warriors to reach double figures. The loss dropped Golden State to 21-21 on the season, their fourth time at .500 in the past 14 days.

“It’s incredibly significant for our season,” Curry said about the team’s current stretch of home games. “You’d hope to be a better home team than you are on the road. Tonight was not great; Captain Obvious statement.”

The Warriors are battling significant injuries, with Draymond Green (calf strain), Chris Paul (hand), Gary Payton II (hamstring), and Jonathan Kuminga (ankle) all sidelined. Since starting the season 12-3, Golden State has gone 9-18, including six losses by more than 10 points in their last 21 games.

Boston’s victory showcased the stark contrast between the two franchises. While the Celtics have maintained their core from their 2022 NBA Finals team, the Warriors have undergone significant roster changes. “They have pretty much the whole rotation still, and they are the defending champs,” Curry said. “So, they’re coming in with a level of confidence and swagger about ’em, and it’s the exact opposite of what we have right now.”

Warriors coach Steve Kerr emphasized the need to move on from the loss. “We’ve got to flush this one down the toilet and get ready for [Sacramento],” Kerr told reporters. The Warriors will face the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday before hosting the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday.

Golden State’s struggles were evident throughout the game. They went 10 minutes without a field goal spanning the first and second quarters and shot just 34.8% from the field through three quarters. The Celtics, meanwhile, shot 54.3% from the field and 41.7% from 3-point range.

As the Warriors look to regroup, Curry remains determined. “Next man up mentality,” he said. “Everybody who steps foot on the floor has gotta be able to perform, bring a spirit of ‘you belong,’ and do it together as a unit. Didn’t happen tonight.”
