Josh Johnson Washington Commanders Quarterback Signing

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Commanders announced they have signed veteran quarterback Josh Johnson to a one-year deal as they bolster their quarterback lineup ahead of the upcoming NFL season.

Johnson, 38, returns to the Commanders after spending the 2018 season with the team, where he made three starts. Most recently, he served as a backup with the Baltimore Ravens, where he played in six games and logged 36 offensive snaps last season.

Since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Johnson has had a journeyman career, playing for numerous teams across the league, including stints in the AAF and XFL. His experience in multiple systems gives him a distinct advantage as he steps into a backup role behind expected starter Jayden Daniels, the 2024 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Marcus Mariota, who signed a one-year deal last month.

In Johnson’s career, he has participated in 45 games with nine starts, completing 58 percent of his passes for 2,297 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. His familiarity with the Commanders’ organization could help streamline the transition into the 2025 season.

The move comes as the Commanders navigate a busy free agency period, with 24 players hitting the market and prompt decisions being made to strengthen the roster. Among notable signings include wide receivers Michael Gallup and Noah Brown, who re-signed with the team, and the acquisition of Deebo Samuel via trade from the San Francisco 49ers.

Johnson’s signing likely means the team will move on from last year’s third-string quarterback Jeff Driskel as they finalize their training camp preparations and finalize the quarterback depth chart ahead of the NFL Draft.

The Commanders are focused on enhancing their competitive edge this offseason, seeking to build on last year’s success that saw them reach the NFC Championship. By bringing in experienced players like Johnson, the organization is clearly aiming for a mix of stability and capability as they prepare for the upcoming challenges.
